Nas with Notepads is a poetic community that was founded in 2011 by a group of six young adults brought together by their shared love for poetry and spoken word. In an effort to share this love and build a community, the group created a forum that not only gave young poets the opportunity to express themselves freely, but also the platform and tools to discover, develop, and showcase their talent. Nas with Notepads strives to introduce a different image of Sudan to the world; an image that exudes creativity, innovation and positivity. In addition, Nas with Notepads also offers learning opportunities for both aspiring and seasoned poets under its WORDshop program.
We love to write, we love to read and we love to hear everybody’s words.
It’s a place that gathers a lot of beautiful minds and souls, a place where all these people belong to something even more beautiful, away from the stress of life and the burdens of society.
NWN is home.
NWN is home. It is family, and freedom and familiarity. NWN is that beacon of hope that helps you through the last week of every month, because you know at the beginning of the next week, you get to go back to that safe space that will always welcome you, regardless of who you are, and where you’ve come from, and what you do. It is where we go to bare our souls and release all the pent up frustrations and annoyances of the past month. The support we find in a room full of people who are initially strangers is somewhat miraculous, because even if you and I know nothing of each other, we know that *this* is where we can come together 🙂

We started Nas with Notepads as a group that aims to promote quality poetry in Khartoum. Our main purpose is to attract genuine and outstanding poets and a loving and truly interested audience for evenings of quality poetry and spoken word performances in an intimate and cozy atmosphere. Our overall mission is to promote, using the creative process, a platform through which youth can both make a substantial impact on Sudanese culture and project an image of Sudan that has yet to be seen.
These are some of the things we hope to achieve through our work:
- Free expression
- Youth engagement
- A culture of writing and creative expression
- Cultural awareness
- Making Sudan positively recognized globally
Nas with Notepads hold poetry and spoken word events in the open mic style on the first Monday of every month. Our events are private and by invitation only. Invitations are sent by email to the NWN mailing list. Those who wish to attend reply to the invitation email, and names of attendees are added to the guest list on first-come first-serve basis until venue capacity is reached (usually around 90 people). Once the guest list is filled, interested individuals will be placed on waiting list pending any cancellations.
If you are interested in receiving invitations to NWN events, join our mailing list by scrolling down and subscribing.
In our efforts to promote free expression, we provide a completely uncensored mic, which means that we have no control over the language that the poet chooses to use, nor are we responsible for the content their poetry addresses. That being said, we do understand the environment in which we operate, and value the safety of our poets and audience. This is why our events are private and by invitation only.
NWN events are photographed and uploaded to our website. If you don’t wish to have your pic taken, kindly notify one of the organizers or drop us a message (see that envelope on the bottom-right corner?)
